The doctors scratched their heads. This was improbable. Week after week the lovely young woman and her devoted husband arrived at the prenatal specialist's office. The baby, as expected, wasn’t growing. But he was active, bouncing and tossing, heart beating. Pushing the envelope. As if to tell them all: “I live. No matter how long, I live.” Yes, it was improbable.
Options, each with their own set of risks - none any better than the others - were suggested by good and kind doctors. All of them requiring the baby to be taken out of the womb, out of the safest place, the most nurturing place. The agony of it all brought new meaning to the tossed-about term they call “adulting”. This struggle was more than real. It was surreal.
And then the day came. The final doctor’s visit ended their tenuous hope. The baby’s heart had stopped beating. Time warped, weaved, sped, stopped. Mommy and Daddy unwavering, supernaturally strong, doing what parents do. Giving their all.
Baby Boy Cedric entered the arms of his parents - and the arms of angels - at 2:18 am on May 14, 2022.
Life, death, anguish, and love.
And the greatest of these is love.
