Why The Jesuit Retreat Center of Los Altos?

Q. Why does The Jesuit Retreat Center of Los Altos need planned gifts

A. The hearts of many are drawn to the encounter with Christ and to the spiritual freedom that are key graces of making the Spiritual Exercises. El Retiro’s hope is that this ministry of Ignatian prayer will be available to all who seek these graces, so we have tried, over the decades, to keep retreat rates affordable and to make financial assistance available to any who need it. Today this means that, on the average, donations from our generous friends subsidize about half the cost of each retreatant’s stay.

Maintaining the historic structures and gracious ambience of the Retreat Center is a task without end, as we comply with safety guidelines, keep each of our buildings both comfortable and in good working order, and tend the 38 acres of garden and forest. Providing for the needs of our guests, extending to each a warm welcome, preparing and serving ample and nourishing meals, and making available skilled and caring spiritual directors calls for a versatile and committed staff, well deserving of compensation both sufficient and fair.

Charitable bequests and other planned gifts have played a major and essential part, year after year, in allowing us to continue the El Retiro tradition. Such gifts allow the donor to partner in the El Retiro ministry without putting his or her own financial future at risk. Such gifts bear fruit on the Lord’s own time, often providing support just when it seems most necessary. Such gifts symbolize both the donor’s grateful return of what has been received from the Giver of all gifts and the donor’s continuing assistance in God’s ongoing venture of Creation.
