
A Silent Retreat for Men
Our lives are full of yearning and desires. Often we try to fill these desires with what fails to satisfy. The source of our being and its fulfillment is our Creator and Lord, Jesus Christ. This retreat will help redirect our desiring to Him.
Fr. Bernard J. Bush, S.J., Ph.D., worked for 13 years as a therapist for clergy and religious. He has written articles on spirituality, social justice, and child abuse prevention and the book Living in His Love: Essays on Prayer and Christian Living. He edited Coping: Issues of Emotional Living in an Age of Stress for Clergy and Religious.
Mr. Michael Cheney is a spiritual director and theology teacher. He currently teaches at Jesuit High School in Sacramento where he also serves as the Director of Faculty Development. From 1984-2002, he taught theology at Loyola High School in Los Angeles. He also taught theology and philosophy as an adjunct instructor at Mt. St. Mary's College and Marymount College in southern California. He and his wife, who have been married for 25 years, have three children. With Fr. John Powell, S.J., he co-authored two books, A Life-Giving Vision: How to Be a Christian in Today's World (Thomas More Press) and The Christian Vision of Reality (Resources for Christian Living).

Fr. Joseph Fice, S.J., spent 25 years as a religious educator in Jesuit High Schools in California and Arizona before coming to the Jesuit Retreat Center in 2000. Much of his teaching was in the field of Sacred Scripture. Since the early 70', he has been working on individually-directed retreats, often directing the 30-Day Spiritual Exercises. Fr. Fice manages the superb Retreat Center's Bookstore.
Fr. Emmanuel Foro, S.J., a priest from the West Africa Province of the Jesuits, studying for a doctorate at the Jesuit School of Theology, in Berkeley, has interest in human growth in the God-given freedom to love and serve with delight. St Ignatius and Bernard Lonergan, S.J have a significant mark on his biblical culture and approach to Church tradition.
Fr. Jim Hanley, S.J., Spiritual Director Emeritus. A native San Franciscan, Fr. Jim entered the Jesuit order in 1945 after graduation from Sacred Heart High School, San Francisco. Following his ordination to the priesthood in 1958, Fr. Jim served as a teacher of religion and a campus minister at St. Ignatius College Preparatory, San Francisco, and Loyola High School, Los Angeles. He served as president of St. Ignatius College Preparatory and as vice-provincial in charge of formation in the California Province.
Fr. Jim Hanley, S.J. who was on the Retreat Center staff for 25 years, will be helping on various retreats during the year. Fr. Jim now lives at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center at Los Gatos and works as a spiritual director for the priests of the Stockton Diocese.
Fr. Gerald F. Hudson, S.J., was, for many years, a mathematics teacher (at Loyola High School, Loyola Marymount University, and St. Ignatius College Preparatory). He has served several times as a director in the JRC 36-Day Program. He joined the staff of the JRC in August of 2006 and has been involved in retreats and spiritual direction.
Ms. Barbara Nelson is a native of San Francisco, a convert to Catholicism, and a member of St. Agnes Church in San Francisco. She serves as a Lector and provides training for Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. She is also the former Director of Volunteers and has served three years on the Pastoral Council and four years as a team leader with the RCIA program. Barbara has developed and is a co-presenter for Lenten/Advent Retreats at St Agnes based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. She is a Spiritual Director for the 19th Annotation, retreats and general spiritual direction. A dedicated student of Ignatian Spirituality and Scripture, she is a member of the ground breaking Pierre Favre Program at the Jesuit Retreat Center.
