Fr. George E. Schultze, S.J., is a spiritual director at St. Patrick's Seminary and University. He studied industrial and labor relations at Cornell University and graduated from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. His doctoral research at USC focused on the influence of Catholicism in community and labor organizing efforts in the Hispanic community. He recently published "Strangers in a Foreign Land: The Organizing of Catholic Latinos in the U.S." He is from Mountain View, California
His research has centered on the influence of Catholicism on community and labor organizing efforts in the United States’ rapidly growing Latino population. He has also studied the relationship between work and religious faith in worker-owned enterprises and has a particular interest in the Mondragón Cooperative Corporation. He argues that if careers are vocations, then discernment has a major role to play in discovering and following one’s true path. Healthy citizen-laborers are bound together by communal discernment and acts of sacrifice for the commonweal. They are fundamentally touching the sacred. The modern world would benefit from a greater recognition of this reality in the human condition.
